How long is EMT training going to take?
How long is EMT training? Emergency medical technician training can vary greatly from one state to another. The length of training can also vary from one county to another. Some states also have regional emergency medical systems (EMS) agencies which vary from one agency to another. There is no universal program length for all EMT training and classes. You must also factor in the level of emergency medical technician training you are looking for in a program.
You can expect the EMT-Basic course to be the shortest. Nonetheless it is still a lot of class time and practical learning. It is typical to have classroom time that takes at a minimum 130 hours. There will also be a ride along with current EMTs or a practical hands on learning session. The practical portion of the class takes at least 15 hours or more to complete. All in there will be at least 145 hours of total training. Some programs may take as much as 200 hours to complete. When determining how long is EMT training you must look at the number of weeks need to complete it. Some shorter programs can be completed in as little as 5 weeks. On the other end of the scale it may take a full 16 weeks to finish all your training.
A paramedic program is going to be the longest EMT training. A paramedic program can span thousands of hours in length. Expect at a minimum to spend a year doing your training program. This means that you will be spending more than 1,200 hours completing your paramedic EMT training. If you take your training through a community college it will be coupled with an Associates of Arts degree. This means that you will likely be doing at least two years worth of classes including some general education courses.
When determining how long EMT training is for paramedic you must know that must already be an EMT to take this training. You must have at least an EMT-Basic certification to become a paramedic. This means that you will have additional time need to complete the EMT-Basic training first. This could mean that it will take over 1,400 hours to become paramedic EMT certified.
You need to understand how much commitment is need to be an EMT. Ask yourself how long is EMT training going to be for me and do I have the time needed to complete it. It can be a full time commitment that take up several months at the least.
